The Hortonville High School Physical Education Department has received recognition by the National Association for Sports and Physical Education as a STAR SCHOOL in 2005 and again in 2008 for an outstanding physical education program. Along with the national recognition, the department received a banner that has been placed in the field house and $200. The following paragraph is the summary overview the department received as part of the overall critique. “Four outstanding teachers provide a quality physical education program for 1058 students, grades 9-12, at the Hortonville High School. The primary focus of the program is fitness. A wide variety of activities is provided including curling, wall climbing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, fly fishing and archery. “Workout Wednesday” is a unique team effort designed and implemented by 3 of the teachers to address, on a weekly rotation, specific components of fitness. Results of 4 years of implementing this program show scores on the PACER have improved from 40% to 75% of the students “achieving their healthy fitness zone.” Positive results have also been seen in flexibility and strength scores. A “cardio room” includes treadmills, recumbents, ellipticals, air dyne bicycles and Dance, Dance Revolution dance pads and a weight room. Both areas are open for student use before and after school on selected days. An elective program for seniors has attracted a high of 43% of the students participating. Many changes to the program have been made since revision of the curriculum (2002) to focus on fitness and lifetime activities. Programs engaging the community in fitness activities have been initiated such as a 3 K Community Walk and a Walking Club for staff and community using pedometers to record activity levels.” Hortonville High School received the “Gold Governor’s School Health Award in May, 2007. The Physical Education department is part of the award providing and developing lifelong healthy behaviors.
Hortonville High School’s Physical Education Department has also been chosen to take part in the Healthier Generation Program, a cooperative initiative with the American Heart Association and President Clinton. This program began in the fall of 2006. In August 2007, Hortonville High School was awarded the Bronze Award from the Alliance along with 25 other schools in the nation.
