Introduction
  • Everyday landfills take  in thousands of tons of garbage. Your goal is to become aware of and reduce the fillers leaving your home. You will need to become familiar with items which can be recycled. Tap into the links in the sources section to find out more about ways to reduce the amount of garbage that leaves your home. The waste that is not recycled becomes an earth filler. These fillers are a huge problem we create for ourselves. Become a problem solver and learn how you can make a difference.

  • Become an Earth Thriller not a Filler.

3
Task
  • Your task is to reduce the amount of waste you send to the landfill by properly reducing, reusing, recycling, repairing and composting the waste generated in your home.
4
Process
  • This project involves weighing the garbage you recycle and the waste you send to the landfill.

  • You will gather four weeks of data and determine the total amount of waste that leaves your home. These are land fillers and are calculated by subtracting the recycled materials from your total wastes.

  • You will determine which waste has the greatest contribution to the landfill and which contributes the least.

  • Then you will create a list of top ten Earth Fillers. These are the most common items you found that make their way to the landfill each week from your home.

  • Then you will create ten ways to reduce or avoid the fillers that leave your home to pile up in the landfill. This list will be turned into an awareness poster for you, your family, and your friends so you can make a difference.
