Gary Marx,
president of the Center for Public Outreach in Vienna, VA, said in his pamphlet,
Ten Trends: Educating Children for a Profoundly
Different Future, there is a marked need for including an ethics component
in most courses. While teachers will
not dictate a particular ethical code, they must ask students to think, write about,
and discuss the ethical implications of what they are learning.
In essence, they will teach the concept of ethics through precept
and example, and stimulate students to consider the possible effects of their ideas
and actions on themselves and others. At Hortonville High School we teach the
approximately 1180 students that ethical behavior and ethical responsibility are
of paramount importance both in school and in life after school.
In the
past 20 years, student numbers in grades 9 through 12 have grown from 150 to an
average of 295 in each of the four
grades. The high school faculty is composed of 103 full time professional
staff with an average twenty years classroom experience. Overall student-faculty
ratio is approximately 12:1.
Career statistics gathered in the past five years indicate approximately 75 percent
of graduating seniors attend post-secondary educational institutions.
Two percent enter the military and the remaining 23 percent enter the work force
or engage in other pursuits.
Hortonville High School students have the opportunity to begin their post secondary
educations while still in high school. Fourteen high school classes are now articulated with Fox Valley Technical College. This means students receive high school credit and technical college credit while taking the class here at the high school. The Youth Options program enables students to leave the high
school campus to
take courses during their junior and/or senior years at either a university or at a technical college The Advanced Placement program
gives students the opportunity to pursue college level courses such as physics, chemistry,
biology, English Literature and Composition, Spanish, and calculus while in high
school.
In turn, students receive advanced placement in college or actual
college credit. Seniors who desire the opportunity
to develop job skills in an area related to post high school career goals are encouraged
to apply for School Supervised Work Experience. In addition to job placement,
students learn about career assessment, college survival/student success,
Seven
Habits of Highly Effective People, career decision making, problem solving, and successful transition from school to work. Distance learning through
the K-12 Schools/College Alliance for Distance Education (KSCADE) provides students
with the opportunity to take courses during the school
day from other locations via video network.
With unparalleled
parent support for its strong athletic programs, its unrivaled music department,
and forensics and debate teams that go toe to toe with the best in the country,
Hortonville High is a college prep learning center with a rural heart providing
students with urban opportunity.
