A Message from the Principal
Every day, we have many wonderful people doing great things in our schools. You can read about some of these kind acts on our website. Go to www.hasd.org , run your cursor over the "District" tab to the left and click on "Good News". You may also view and report new news using the “good news” link near the bottom of the page. Each week members of our school community submit good news and it is shared with everyone. It's a great opportunity to say thanks to someone doing something special!
As you know we have had three snow days this school year already. In accordance to the District calendar, we will be making two of these days up at the end of the school year. That makes our last day of school Wednesday, June 11 with busses leaving at 11:50. The high school will be having their final exams on the afternoon of Monday, June 9 (Hours 1-2), all day Tuesday, June 10 (Hours 3-6) and the morning of Wednesday, June 11 (Hours 7-8).
As spring approaches, so does the end of our school year. Encourage students to finish strong and roll into the summer on a good note! Thanks for all you do to help us out!

District E-Mail Information
Effective March 24, 2008, students will be able to only send and receive email from staff or students within the school district. Based on issues/concerns about the inappropriate emails students were receiving from the outside, the administrative team extensively reviewed this matter and considered other resolutions including more costly software solutions. It is the finding of the administrative team that none of the potential software solutions would satisfactorily eliminate inappropriate emails from the outside. In an attempt to reduce these types of emails the district increased Spam/Junk email filtering. This resulted in many important parent/outside emails to staff members not going through.
Using our web service at home, students will still be able to send emails, homework, projects, and assignments to themselves and teachers. The IT department in conjunction with the administrative team is working on ways to assist students that may have a need for more extensive parameters on their email accounts.
Students taking computer classes at our middle schools and high school receive information on how to access HASD Outlook Web email at school or home. Listed below are brief instructions to access HASD Web email. Students needing further help can contact any computer teacher or school office.

ACT/SAT
Since colleges require either ACT or SAT for admissions and placement, juniors considering attending a four year college should take the ACT and/or SAT this summer. Some scholarships also require ACT/SAT scores.
The ACT will be given on Saturday, June 14, 2008, with a registration deadline of May 9, 2008. The SAT will be given on Saturday, June 7, 2008, with a registration deadline of April 16, 2008. Both tests allow late registration for a substantial additional charge (usually double the regular fee). Both tests will be available again in the fall.
ACT tests four major areas: English, mathematics, reading and science reasoning. This test is preferred by the University of Wisconsin system. SAT tests two areas: verbal reasoning and mathematical skills.
SENIORS – FYI
UW Schools have started closing admissions. We expect to be hearing that more are closing admissions in the near future. If you have not turned in your college application yet, you should do so immediately.
REMINDER
Local scholarship applications were mailed home to all seniors and are also available in guidance. Students must turn in the completed applications by 3:15 p.m. on Friday, April 11, 2008. NO LATE APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR ANY REASON. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST DAY TO TURN IN YOUR APPLICATION TO AVOID LAST MINUTE PROBLEMS. These scholarships are available only to Hortonville High School seniors planning on furthering their education next year at any college, technical school or cosmetology school. The money comes from local sources such as civic organizations, memorials, businesses, and individual contributions.
P.A.R.T.Y @the PAC
On Thursday, April 3, both the Appleton Medical Center and Theda Clark Medical Center Foundations will sponsor the P.A.R.T.Y. program at the Fox Cities PAC. Approximately 2,500 ninth grade students from the area public and parochial schools will attend one of the half-day events.
The high-energy, interactive P.A.R.T.Y. at the PAC aims to deliver to teens a powerful, positive message about the perils of risk-taking behavior, the consequences, and personal responsibility, while empowering them to make informed, safe choices. The program includes a high-impact opening with students, a student skit, trauma and neurosurgeon presentations, trauma and spinal cord survivor stories, an emotionally gripping video and an under-the-influence driving simulator demonstration.
SUMMER SCHOOL
Courses will be offered during the summer for students who need to make up credits in required courses for graduation. There will also be a few courses offered for non-remedial credit. The Fox Valley Consortium, composed of eleven school districts in the Fox Valley, is offering these classes. Hortonville High School intends to offer the following remedial courses if there is sufficient enrollment: Math Lab (Applied Algebra A, B , C, D), Social Studies 9 – Government, Social Studies 9- Geography, U.S. History, English, Integrated Science, and Biology. The dates for classes at Hortonville will be June 16-July 11 (with the week of 6/30-7/4 off) for the first session (1/2 credit) and July 14 – Aug. 1 for the second session (1/2 credit). These courses, as well as others, will be offered at different schools in the Fox Valley. Appleton E-school is offering some half credit courses online this summer also.
Interested students should check with the guidance office for more information on all classes. Course information and registration forms are available in the High School Counseling Office for classes held at Hortonville as well as for classes at other Fox Valley Consortium schools. Please feel free to call the Counseling Office at 779-7934 if you have any questions or would like more information.
FRESHMEN GUIDANCE GROUPS
All freshmen will be involved in a group counseling experience starting April 1. They will be completing four year academic plans, learning how to become more resilient people and how to deal with bullying and harassment. Counselors will be coming into the students’ social studies classes to deliver these important lessons to the students.
SOPHOMORE GUIDANCE GROUPS
All sophomores will be starting a sophomore group guidance experience in May. This program has been created to give sophomores an introduction to career exploration. This experience will consist of three meetings (one of which will be in the classroom, one in small groups in the counseling office and one meeting with a representative from the Career Connection, a local community career center). Students will explore how their interests, abilities, life goals and values apply to the world of work. Interest inventories and achievement test results, as well as grades, will be used as an aid in the career decision making process. School preparation in regard to career choices will also be discussed.
