North Greenville Elementary School is proud to be the school “UP NORTH” in the HASD! As expected, the enrollment in increasing! NGES has grown from 307 students in the fall of 2014 to currently 373 students.
This year, the staff of NGES worked together to develop a mantra. After reviewing the short history of NGES, teachers generated ideas and engaged in a multi-layered voting process that led to the mantra: Kids. First. Always. At North Greenville, teachers put Kids. First. Always. and focus their work and decisions based on the needs of the students.
The NGES Literacy Team has crafted “I Believe” statements for each area of the literacy framework. According to Mrs. Cochrane, NGES Principal, “The purpose of these statements is to form a common understanding of quality literacy instruction throughout the building.” Reading progress at the end of the 2015-16 school resulted in over 90% of students reading at or above the expected level.
The NGES Math Team has focused on Depth of Knowledge (DOK) levels in instruction and raised them to help students soar. Each grade level has strived to increase rigor for students, particularly with power standards. This goal is being measured and monitored by the Math Team!
Teacher teams are continually looking at data from the Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) framework and setting goals by grade level. Needs in each grade level vary, so having grade level teams examine student data has empowered staff and students to be caring, honest, respectful and responsible! The PBIS Core Team continues to focus on school wide data and celebrate with students the great choices they are making.
In January, NGES hosted Family Math and Literacy Night. Students played math games and engaged in reading and writing activities with their teachers and parents. The PTO also hosted the annual Polar Palooza, a fun family event that included entertainment and a basket raffle. NGES enjoys involvement and participation from families in these after hour events.
Student community involvement is active at NGES. Student artwork has been displayed at the Bergstrom Mahler Museum. The Student Council has been involved in the annual food drive, Salvation Army bell ringing and visits to a local nursing home. Upcoming events at NGES include spring music concerts and the annual FundRun, a PTO fundraiser with a healthy flair!
It’s a great year to be “UP NORTH” at North Greenville Elementary School, where the mantra is Kids. First. Always!
