Individual Schools Health Updates
Health News from The High School

MAY,  2010

We are honored to again receive the Governor’s School Health Award. Hortonville High School has received the Gold level the past 3 years but this year we were able to even surpass that and receive the Platinum. It is a way to celebrate schools with policies, programs, and the infrastructure to support and promote healthy eating; physical activity; and drug-free lifestyles; The goal of this award is to motivate and empower Wisconsin schools as they create and maintain healthy school environments.

The high school was part of the district wide “Off the Waist and Around the World” tracking program for the DPI-Moving and Muchin.

We started offering healthier choices in the food service lines, ala carte, and vending machines in the commons.

We have many activities planned for next year including participating in the National Association of School Nurses educational campaign to encourage parents of preteens and teens to have their student receive the meningococcal vaccination.

As the school year comes to a close, there are a few things to be aware of  --------

All medication (prescription or over the counter) that was brought in during the school year will be sent home before the end of the school year.  If you would like to pick them up,  please stop in and I will be happy to give them to you.

The only over the counter medication the Health Room distributes is Adult Tylenol & Advil .  We have tablets only.  We do not have the liquid form.  Any other form of over the counter medication you would want your child to have  should  be brought to the Health Room and a form needs to be filled out and signed.  A new form needs to be completed each year during school registration. This year’s form will not carry over to next fall.

Any prescription medication that is brought to school must be in the actual bottle that came from the pharmacy.  A form must be filled out and signed by the parent.  We also need a signed form from the physician.

All 6th,7th, and 8th grade student will need to have received the TDAP and 2nd Varicella  (chickenpox) vaccines by the start of school next fall.  The majority of 7th and 8th graders should already have received these immunizations.

Have  a great summer !

Playground Safety

Playgrounds can be a lot of fun but sometimes kids get hurt, that’s no fun. Here are some ways to keep safe:

1. When climbing on playground equipment don’t climb too high: Many playgrounds have tall places to play on, such as towers or open passageways between equipment. Don’t climb higher than you feel comfortable, and feel free to ask a grown-up or a friend if you need help getting down.

2. Look out below: The best playgrounds have a special surfacing material, such as mulch, wood chips, or sand. That doesn’t mean you can’t get hurt, especially if you tumble from a high spot.

3. Swing Safety: Children often get hurt at the playground because they get hit by someone on a swing. If you’re swinging, watch out for students who might be getting to close. If you’re walking around the playground, don’t get too close to the students on swings.

4. Use your head: Sometimes you’ll see students going head first down the slide or try to climb up it. Two or three students may try to get on a piece of equipment that’s only meant for one. Use the playground equipment the way it should be used.

5. Report problems: If you find any problems like a broken swing, or misuse of a piece of equipment, tell an adult.

6. Have fun at the playground and by using the safety tips you will have a safe time while playing.

As the school year comes to a close, there are a few things that we would like parents to be aware of----

All Medication (Prescription or over the counter) that was brought in during the school year will be sent home a day or two before the end of the school year. If you would Like to pick this up yourself, please just stop in and I will be happy to give to you.

The ONLY medication the Health Room does have on Hand is Adult Tylenol, Advil and Jr. Tylenol. Anything else that YOU would like your child to have needs to be send to school with his/her name on it and brought to the Health-Room.

Any Prescription Medication that is sent to school MUST be sent in the Actual bottle that came from the Pharmacy. A medical Consent form will be filled out for each medication brought in.

During Fall Registration---a New over the Counter Medication Form will need to be signed—this does NOT carry over from year to year. Any Medical forms you need to turn in or need to fill out can be done at that time.
With the school year quickly coming to a close, please be aware of the following…..
Ø Presently, there are a lot of students with allergy symptoms. I do not have any allergy medications here that I am able to give your student to help relieve their symptoms. If you would like your student to be able to take something, while at school, you must send this in from home with a signed note stating the dosage and the time to be given.

Ø Within the last week of school, I will be sending all prescription and over-the-counter medications home with your student. If you would prefer to pick them up yourself, please let me know.

Ø At the start of school next fall, you will need to fill out a new medication consent form in order for your student to take any medications (prescription or over-the-counter) here at school. This year’s form will not carry over to next fall. If it is a prescription medication, I will also need to have a physician’s consent form filled out. These forms can be obtained from me at Open House in the fall.

Ø All 6th, 7th and 8th grade students will need to have received the Tdap and 2nd Varicella (chickenpox) vaccines by the start of school next fall. The majority of the 7th and 8th graders should already have received these immunizations. Those students who I do not have record of receiving them, should have received a notice in the mail from me within the last month.
