Reactivity of Oxidation Reduction Reactions
Saftey: We will be dealing with three chemicals in the lab that are more danerous. Chlorine water, Bromine water and Iodine water. These should be handled with care. They should be used only in the fume hood.
Introduction:
Goal: Determine which metals are the strongest oxidizers and which non-metals are the strongest reducers.
This lab is split into to halves, metals and non-metals. All of the reactions taking place in this lab are oxidation reduction.
Example: Can Copper oxidize zinc ions(Zn2+)
Cu => Cu2+ + 2 e- ____________ V
Zn2+ + 2e => Zn ____________V
Cu + Zn2+ => Zn + Cu2+ __________V
You should be able to determine the voltages ahead of time and then run the reaction to see if the reaction actually works or not?
You should be able to place these metals in order of reactivity and be able to predict who will be able to ox/red who.
All waste materials should be place in approiate container!
