Writing Components
Mini-Lessons: Short lessons that provide direct-instruction and guided practice on the writing process, style, and grammar and usage. Independent practice and assessment of the skills and strategies will take place through a variety of activities.
Six-Traits of Writing: The Six-Traits of Writing are powerful way to learn and use a common language to refer to characteristics of writing. In addition, it also creates a common vision of what “good” writing looks like. The Six-Traits are used to pinpoint the areas of strengths and weaknesses as students continue to focus on improved writing.
District Writing Assessment: The school district assesses student writing once a year, in the Fall and Spring. Students are given two 45-minute class sessions to complete the writing assessment. If necessary, additional time will be provided for students to copy their final draft.
The Seventh Grade writing prompt focuses on persuasive writing. Students are asked to think about what they know about good writing as well as the writing process. Students are encouraged to prewrite (organize their thoughts and ideas), draft, revise, and write a final copy of their paper. They are allowed to use a dictionary to check their spelling; however, no other resources are allowed. Following each session, the assessment materials are collected and are returned to the students the next day. Teachers are not allowed to help students with the writing assessment.
