In Unit 2, Physical and Chemical Changes and Physical and Chemical Properties, we will be studying properties, or characteristics of matter. Physical properties include properties that you can observe without changing the matter into something else, such as color, density or temperature. Chemical properties are properties that require a change in the matter to observe, such as flammability. We will also be learning how to measure these properties. We will also be studying and measuring physical and chemical changes, such as a change in size or volume (physical change) or a change in matter, such as burning a piece of paper into ashes (chemical change). There will be numerous labs during this unit.
The essential learning targets for this unit are as follows:
- I can identify physical and chemical properties of matter and cite evidence to support my answer.
- I can explain why characteristic properties are important to identifying specific types of matter.
- I can identify physical and chemical properties of matter and cite evidence to support my answer.
- I can identify the differences between physical and chemical changes and cite evidence to support my answers.
- I can predict the results and then test properties of matter in regards to thermal conductivity.
