Mission Statement
The Hortonville Area School District, in partnership with our community, will provide ALL students with challenging and diverse opportunities to become enthusiastic lifelong learners who will build the future.

Research Paper and Presentation

We have started our 3rd quarter project of writing a research paper. Students will soon chose a topic related to a social issue that affects our society. Students will write a research paper that contains two major parts: 1) proving that this topic is an issue and 2) providing a call to action (What can we do about it?). Click on the requirements link below to see more information. Following the completion of the research paper, students will present their information to their classmates in the form of a Public Service Announcement(PSA). The PSA will need to include the highlights of the research that the students preformed and the call to action. My calendar will have specific dates and assignmnents.

Dates to remember:

February 27 - Research Paper Rough Draft Due

March 12 - Research Paper Final Draft Due

March 20 - Social Issue Public Service Announcement Presentation Due

MLA CITATIONS

The Research Paper will follow MLA rules for documenting sources. Students can click here to create Works Cited page citations. Please note that there are many MLA citation generator websites, I chose this one because it seems user friendly. If you have a different site, feel free to use it.

Social Issues Topics
This list can give students ideas for potential research topics.

Research Paper Requirements
This document shows a general outline for the paper and some specific requirements regarding research and sources.

Researching Directions
Our librarian, Mrs. Heidmann, demonstrated how to find strong sources for the research paper.

Driving and Cell Phones - sample paper
This paper is a great example of the format and research that we will use through our research paper writing.

Driving and Cell Phones - Questions
Use the following questions to guide you through reading the paper. The asnwers to these questions are due Tues. 2/1.

Research Vocabulary
Students need to write a definition for the word in their own words. Students then need to use the word in a sentence.

MLA Tips
This document was prepared by Mrs. Eggen and used in computer classes. This is a great resource to reference if you have any questions about MLA documentation. Thanks for helping us out Mrs. Eggen!

Rubric for Notecards
Students will take notes on notecards using a method we discussed in class.

Rough Draft Grading Checklist
The Research Paper Rough Draft is due to turnitin.com. Rought drafts are graded using the attached scoring.

Final Draft Rubric-Research Paper
Final Drafts are due to turnitin.com. This rubric will be used (along with the six traits rubric below) to score the final drafts.

Final Draft Rubric - Six Traits
This is the district Six Traits rubric that we have used for other writing projects this year. It will again be used to score the final drafts.

Transitions
The attachment has ideas on words and phrases to use for transitions to make your paper more fluent.

PSA Commercial Rubric
To complete the research project, students are creating a Public Service Announcement Commercial demonstrating their issue and call to action.
