The eighth graders at GMS are involved in a unit during the school year that is designed to challenge and motivate them. This real-world simulation called THAT’S LIFE integrates math, social studies, language, and technology. The simulations in THAT’S LIFE include the following:
-
Personal--deciding on living alone or with a roommate, adopting a pet, earning a degree, health insurance
-
Career—finding employment, writing résumés and cover letters
-
Finance—using checkbooks, creating a budget, making deposits, getting paychecks and paying bills, taxes
-
Housing—finding and purchasing/renting a place to live and furnishing it
-
Transportation—finding and purchasing a vehicle, paying for gasoline and insurance
In addition, students will learn how currencies work, including monetary conversion, economic reform, international currency rates such as: Euro, Peso, Yen, U.S. Dollar, Pound. Students will follow the international exchange rate. To begin the unit, students will be given a packet of papers put together in their binder (portfolio). These papers will be completed and graded as we move along the unit, with a final grade at the end of the unit. Students will be allowed to either “live” alone or with a same-sex roommate; partners will get separate grades for certain papers, while the pair will be graded together on other portions. A schedule of due dates will be given to each student and posted on this website.
The eighth grade team is seeking interested parents to come in for one of two Career Days. Watch for more details.
Wish your child luck on his or her journey through this unit!
