READING WORKSHOP
The goal of reading workshop is to give students the tools to make independent reading choices, have great attitudes about reading, and make reading a lifelong habits. Students will develop strategies to support comprehension and think critically about what is read. They will read a variety of genres and authors and will develop the ability to respond through literature through discussion and writing.
WRITING WORKSHOP
Writing Workshop is a time when students act like real writers. They use the writing process in a variety of genres. Exploring the work of a variety of authors will help students gain insight into their own writing. Students will become familiar with 6-Traits of Writing and will learn to use them as they write.
LANGUAGE/WORD STUDY WORKSHOP
Students will investigate word meaning, vocabulary, and word structure. Words will be drawn from high frequency lists and spelling principles. An appreciation of poetry and literature as well as investigation of current events are part of this workshop.
MATH
In math the concepts will be connected to the real world whenever possible. Five areas will be explored daily: fact practice, mental math, review, concepts, and problem solving. Concepts include: number sense and operations, geometry, measurement, probability, and algebraic relationships.
SCIENCE
Using the scientific process through hands on experiments and projects in the following areas: Life Science and Ecosystems, Earth and Its Resources, Sound and Ideas and Inventions. Our focus will be how we can make a difference in our world in these areas.
HEALTH
Developing awareness of healthy life habits are encouraged in our studies of Germs, Safety, T.V. Turn Off Week, and Drug and Alcohol Prevention.
SOCIAL STUDIES
The world around us is studied by looking at Cultures, Communities, Inventors/Inventions, and Economics. We will look at our world locally, regionally, and globally. The Celebration of Culture in February gave us the opportunity to share our knowledge of communities in our world today.
SPECIALS
Art, Music, World Language, Physical Education, Guidance, and Technology support all subject areas and give students to grow as well rounded citizens of the communities they are involved in.
