Handwriting, when broken down, is composed of many complicated tasks. When a child has difficulty with handwriting, it could be due to muscle weakness, poor visual motor skills, poor visual perception, difficulty with motor planning...the list is quite extensive! Below you will find a variety of activities to address specific areas of difficulty. The most important thing to remember is...make practice sessions short and fun! If handwriting is difficult for your child, try to keep practice sessions to 10 minutes and use a variety of media-not just paper and pencil!
A functional, efficient pencil grasp is very important. If your child is not demonstrating a functional grasp, have them engage in activities to develop hand/finger strength, as well as a neat pinch grasp.
