2013-2014 Registration and Orientation (Save the Date) (August 22, 2013)

Why is 4-K Important?

To improve academic success and close achievement gaps, research heavily documents the benefits of an early learning program for children, the community and society. Empirical and anecdotal evidence clearly shows that nurturing environments with appropriate learning activities have large and lasting effects on children’s school success, their ability to get along with others, and their emotional health.

Research shows that children who attend preschool are more successful during school years. They

  • outperform peers on reading and math tests at age 8, 12, and 15
  • are less likely to experience grade retention or be placed in special education
  • are more likely to graduate from hight school. (High/Scope, Reynolds, Abecedarian)

Research shows that children who attend preschool are more successful outside of and beyond school. They have

  • lower rates of juvenile arrest
  • fewer arrests for violent offenses
  • more jobs and higher wages, and
  • a greater likelihood of owning their own home (Reynolds)

Research shows that children who attend preschool are more likely to have parents who support and understand their developmental and learning needs.  Parents of preschoolers are:

  • more likely to receive the family and health services they need
  • more likely to establish positive relationships with teacher and caregivers early on
  • more likly to be involved in the education of their child
  • less likely to neglect or maltreat their child ( (High/Scope, Reynolds, Abecedarian)

(Creating a Community Approach to Serving Four Year Old Children in Wisconsin, 2003)

The Hortonville Area School District 4-Year-Old Kindergarten Community Collaborative is:

  • an initiative that provides learning opportunities through play-based instruction for all 4 year old children in the District
  • taught by licensed Department of Public Instruction teachers who are highly qualified
  • offered to children who are four years old on or before September 1 of each year
  • a community collaborative approach where the 4K school experiences take place at Hortonville Elementary, St. Edward's,  Fox West YMCA, Play and Grow Learning Center and Hillside Preschool
  • Offered 4 days a week (Monday - Thursday) for half day sessions
  • funded in combination with federal, state, and local tax monies resulting in no tuition charges to families

Transportation is  available for resident students to the site in your attendance zone

Chores for Kids

20 Easy Tasks That Encourage Preschoolers to Help Around the House

By Amanda Rock, About.com Guide

Think your preschooler is too young to help around the house? Assigning simple chores1 to your little one is a great way to develop his sense of responsibility and self-esteem. When assigning chores for your child, it's important to consider his age and ability level2. And remember, he will make mistakes. The important thing is that he is pitching in to the household and feels like a contributing member of the family.

Here's a list of simple chores appropriate for children ages 3-5.

1. Feed household pets

2. Help sort the laundry

3. Place napkins and plastic plates and utensils on the dinner table

4. Bring in the mail or newspaper

5. Bring their empty dinner plate to the counter

6. Pick up their toys

7. Water plants and flowers

8. Wipe off and dust furniture

9. Sweep the floor

10. Help wash the car

11. Pull blankets up on their bed

12. Hang their coat on a peg

13. Put their clothes in the laundry hamper

14. Use a handheld vacuum

15. Clean up their own (minor) spill

16. Fold towels

17. Assist with simple meal preparation

18. Wash plastic cups and dishes

19. Help pull weeds from the garden

20. Pick up sticks in the yard
