Project Lead the Way - Design and Modeling
PB week of 10-21
Get ready design teams, you have exactly one week (5 working class days) to discuss, propose, develop, and design products according to the design briefs given. You and your team will be completing BOTH Mr. Hall AND Mr. Lundstrom's design challenges.
Your first task will be to review the design briefs. Mr. Hall's design brief is located on the website (below); Mr. L's is on the shared folder in Project Lead the Way under Design Brief.
For each design challenge, you must choose a project manager that will be the contact for the given task. The same person cannot be project manager for both projects.
After reviewing the design briefs and identifying project managers, you will need to complete the tasks listed (see Monday's current projects and assignments for additional details). You need to have each of the listed components in your concept presentation:
-an explanation of the challenge
-a summary of your group’s brainstorming and idea development with images of initial sketch drawings
-a summary of struggles and successes during the design process
-screen shots and/or images of your solution as created in Autodesk
-design schematics (Autodesk sketches) with dimensions
-a detailed explanation of how your concept meets the requirements of the design brief
-appropriate images of your team and/or cooperation among team members
-an explanation of the roles that each team member played in the design and presentation process
-(optional, but encouraged) a paper or clay mock-up (like a test run showing rough size or shape of your concept
-(optional, but encouraged) an animated short video created in Autodesk to show features of your model
-(optional, but encouraged) a printed prototype of your concept (this may or may not be possible depending on time constraints). Prototypes (that haven't already been printed) WILL NOT be printed until Mr. Hall and Mr. L. return.

After reviewing the design briefs and identifying project managers, you will need to complete the following tasks in order:
1. Begin by brainstorming ideas that will best meet the project (product) requirements. Document your progress with photos and recorded ideas written down.
2. Sketch 2 or more possible solutions in your PB notebook. Team members can collaborate on sketches (you don't need sketches from every team member), but make sure to show dimensions on your early sketches...also include the date.
3. You might consider making a paper or cardboard "mock up" to get a better idea of how your solution might look (optional, but encouraged).
4. Develop computer drawings of your solutions on Inventor. Your file Inventor file must be an assembly composed of individual parts that are appropriately constrained.
5. As your design is being created on Autodesk, anyone is not actively working on the product design should begin to develop a presentation explaining and promoting your team's proposed solution. Think of it as making a commercial explaining your product and why it will be the best.
6. Use Autodesk inventor to create detailed drawings of your product with dimensions. It is highly recommended that you also find and follow tutorials about animating your product and exporting a video from Autodesk (use an iPad to locate appropriate YouTube video tutorials if necessary).
*As technical problems arise, Alec T., Josh A., and Christopher L. are great people to seek help from (among many others). Also see Alec if your product design incorporates threaded components.
7. If it becomes necessary to focus all efforts on one design challenge (either Mr. Hall's OR Mr. L's), make it so; ANY downtime, however, should be used to develop the second product.

Project Lead the Way - Design and Modeling
Skimmer Lab
Procedure
In this activity you will create a skimmer that will slide across the floor with ease if your measurements are accurate and your workmanship is exceptional.
-
Clean your workstation
-
Neatly and accurately use the plan sheet and measuring tool to draw your skimmer main body, air scoop, and two (2) fins onto the material that you will use to make your skimmer.
**Check in with a FWA Advisor to get approval to cut and assemble.
-
Carefully cut out your skimmer parts. Cut only on the solid lines. The dotted lines are where you will score and fold.
-
Use your ruler to draw the dotted lines on your cardboard air scoop and main body, and then fold on these lines to create a 90° angle.
-
Glue the fins to the ½ in. flap on the main body. Make sure that the angled edge faces the front of your skimmer.
-
Glue (stick glue works well) or tape the main body back to the fins at an angle as shown in the orthographic drawing.
-
Glue the flaps of the air scoop to the inside edges of the main body with the narrow end flush with the front of the main body as shown in the orthographic drawing.
-
After all glue has dried, throw your skimmer along the floor and see how smoothly it glides.
**Report to media pit to begin testing
