Concussion Information

Over the past couple of years there has been a heightened awareness and concern regarding concussions. While health care professionals continue to learn more about the effects of concussions they agree on at least one very important factor: diagnosis and treatment of this injury is difficult because of the nature of the injury. Some have said, "...where you can look at a knee arthroscopically the same isn't true of the brain..." and "...current technology and scanning doesn't always show this injury making recognition of the symptoms that much more important."

DISCLAIMER: the purpose of this page is to be informational only. It is not intended to be comprehensive in nature regarding the topic of concussions. Rather, to provide basic information and links to a few pertinent resources.

Build-A-Bear 2012

Build-A-Bear is the Hortonville High School Summer Conditioning Program. This program is comprised of two phases 1) aerobic/anaerobic conditioning, explosion and 2) strength training. The aerobic/anaerobic conditioning will be done on the High School Track, while the strength training will be done in the High School Fitness Center.  Within the segments we will also integrate plyometrics to help student/athletes increase their speed, agility, coordination, balance, and power.   The starting date will be will be June 11th and will run through the week of August 3rd.

Aerobic/Anaerobic/Explosion Conditioning Phase

HASD students participating in the Aerobic/Anaerobic Conditioning Program will have two time blocks to choose from, 8:00 to 8:45 AM or 9:00 to 9:45 AM Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Students will be lead through a brief warm up and stretch, followed by the conditioning workout for that day. This is a “Conditioning Program”, not just a “Speed Camp”. Workouts will vary in distance from day to day. Some days will be purely distance runs, sometime up to 3 miles or more, while other workouts may consist of interval sprints or shorter all out sprints. This is an intense program with proven effectiveness. A student’s aerobic and anaerobic fitness will improve and you will be in great shape for whatever your sport or lifetime activity may be. Also, this program combined in conjunction with the strength training program will also improve your speed.  Open to grades 7 and up

Strength Phase

HASD students participating in the strength phase will take part in program that uses Bigger, Faster, Stronger (BFS) principles in a comprehensive workout that targets major muscle groups, as well as assistance muscle groups daily.  Workouts will be individualized and safety will be emphasized for all athletes.  The program when done diligently, will take an estimated 45 minutes and can improve muscular strength for any sport.  The weight room hours will be (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Fri from 7:00am-12:00pm).  *Thursday is considered a make-up/and catch up day.  Beginning as well as advanced training instruction will be provided.  Open to grades 9 and up

Cost

Build-A-Bear is a workshop that is provided by The School District of Hortonville Summer School program at NO cost to the student!  Please note that safety is our number one concern at all times, but we do require a Waiver and Liability Form (see below) before your child can participate.   Please sign and bring on 1st day of Build-A-Bear or hand to one of the coaches listed below.

Press Release - Hortonville Athletics
Hortonville High School has hired Matt Hintz as it's head basketball coach. Prior to coaching at Hortonville, Hintz served as the varsity coach for the New London Bulldogs for the past 5 years. According to Andy Kolosso, Activities Director, "We are very pleased to have been able to hire a coach with the knowledge and ability to teach the game of basketball to our student-athletes. We are confident in Matt's abilities to continue success in the program, not only on the court but off the court as well. HASD looks forward to many productive years with Coach Hintz.
BOARD APPROVES FIVE-DIVISION BASKETBALLMODEL; EARLIER FOOTBALL START DATE
Beginning in 2010-11, theWIAA Tournament Series with have a fifth division in basketball. The Board unanimously approved the plan that advances four teams to the State Tournament in each division and five championship games on the final day of the boys and girls tournaments. The plan also provides Division 1 with a ?super sectional? the Tuesday the week of the State Tournament. The change will create greater enrollment balance within divisions. A directive from the Board to eliminate three football games in 10 days at the end of the season will result in beginning the season earlier in 2011. The Board approved the option to begin the season on theWednesday of week five, five days earlier than the traditional start date
WIAA BOARD MODIFIES FOOTBALL-ONLY REALIGNMENT PLANS; APPROVES OTHER ACTION ITEMS
The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control modified Executive Staff recommendations for a pair of football-only conference realignment plans and approved three other notable items requiring a Board vote at its April 28th Annual Meeting. For more information on this subject click on the titled link above.
WIAA 5 Division Basketball Proposal
After the discussions at the Area Meetings this fall, the Board of Control created an ad-hoc committee to address the issues associated with the placement of member schools in divisions for basketball. This 5-division idea came forward from the ad-hoc committee and will proceed through the committee process. As you are probably aware, the 5-division model was not supported by the Basketball Coaches Advisory Committee at their recent meeting. A motion to support the plan failed on a 3-5 vote. Next on the committee calendar will be the Sports Advisory Committee meeting on June 14, Advisory Council meeting on June 23 and Board of Control meeting on June 24.
