Grants for Excellence Awarded for 2016-17 School Year
Hortonville Area School District recently awarded various staff and departments with Grants for Excellence for the 2016-17 school year. The Grants for Excellence program is the district’s research and development effort towards offering innovative teaching and learning practices, ensuring that students learn at the highest level. This year, $55,808 in various grants was requested, $25,255 was awarded to high quality grant proposals.
“The focus of a grant is to allow an educator to propose an innovative idea that is a best practice for teaching and learning,” says Dr. Heidi Schmidt, District Administrator. In order to receive a grant, which can be awarded for up to $5,000, teachers must submit a form specifying what 21st century skills can be integrated, how it improves student learning, ways it can enrich student experiences in the classroom, new strategies it can implement for future teaching, and how it can serve as a model for other teachers.
Submitted forms are then read and approved by a team of community members. This year’s community members included Joe Peikert, Bruce Carew, Gary Cebulski and Amy Cebulski. Nine grants were then approved by the School Board. The grant winners, and names of the grants, are:
- Jennifer Cook – Recess Reading
- Michelle Johnson – Reading to Impress on iPads and in Print
- Melissa Kohl – Alternate Seating in a Regular Classroom
- Jill Ihde – Personalized Learning in First Grade
- GES 2nd Grade Team – Blended Learning in 2nd Grade
- Dane Fuchs – Technology for Special Education Students
- Robert Parmentier & Sabrina Hayen-Infante – Blended and Flipped Classrooms
- Lisa Ales – Project Based Technology Integration
As a district, it is important to look for various ways to impact student learning; the Grants for Excellence program is a great way for educators to do just that.
Congratulations to all grant winners! Watch the HASD Facebook and Twitter page for updates from the individual projects.
