Please check here occasionally for updates regarding information about our classroom. I will also post science and social studies notes for you to use as you help your child prepare for tests. I will also post links on this page for Web sites and other resources that may be of interest to you or your child. Also, be sure to check our Calendar of Events page. You will know when events or tests are coming up to prepare for.
Math: We are beginning our next unit of study for another essential standard. We will be studying long division of whole numbers by 1 digit divisors. We will talk a lot about the process of division and look at various ways to divide, including using the standard algorithm.
Language/Word Study: We have been studying various patterns for words and building our word cards to build those noticings of patterns within words. We've recently been studying the r-controlled vowel patterns and will be continuing this for a few more weeks. Watch for yellow cards coming home, and use those for studying at home.
Reading Workshop: We are completing our unit of study for realistic fiction and will be starting a new unit to investigate informational text. Students have taken the summative assessment for inferencing and supporting those inferences with details from the text. You can check mastery levels on Mastery Connect to see how your child is doing with this. Also, watch for reading calendars at the beginning of each week. Students should read 20 minutes each night and then return the calendars to me at the end of the week. If you need a calendar, you can print one from the link at the bottom of the page.
Writing Workshop: We are almost completing our first unit of writng, narratives. Students have done a great job with these and we've had some great discussions around this type of writing. We will finish these soon, write some poetry, and then begin our next unit, feature articles.
Social Studies: Students have been studying the colonization of America and some of the early colonies that were established by different groups coming to America for the first time. They've learned how challenging those first colonies were. Not an easy life here in the early days!
Science: We've completed our first unit of study, ecosystems and energy flow through them. The summative is done and uploaded in Mastery Connect. Students did very well with this as they needed to create a food web and show the direction of energy flow using arrows. A great model of ecosystems in our world!
