this was noahs message but he made a complete new topic lol.
the ways that wars start is when someone disagrees with another person wether it is a small argument or a big argument but that does not mean that any argument is a war it is only the big arguments like two countries dissagreeing a little disagreement with your parents or siblings is not what you would consider a war although you could consider it a very small war but really it is a war just not a very important war like the civil war was important but an everyday argument is a war that nobody cares about -noah |

a yeah sorry about that i accidentaly made a new topic |
Jon Velie 05/14/2012 2:19 PM |
I I think wars start when someone dislikes and disagrees with another persons ideas or beliefs. |
Jacob O'Connor 05/14/2012 2:17 PM |
Thanks leanna,(sarcasm)
and i think that they start with just a stupid argument or someone sticking there nose in something. then there becomes pushing or someone blows it out of porportion. But thats what i think on wars. (im not sarcastic! )

I think wras start when people don't look at all sides of the story and just assume that they're right. I believe that is people bothered to find out the whole story and have an open mind to being wrong, there would be a lot less wars. Sometimes, though, there are sadistic people who just want war. This question (how are wars started) got me thinking, so I looked it up. I particularly liked this person's thoughts: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100707225413AAhpZkI . |

Just to let you know, Mrs. VanDanlen, I can't find my little booklet!! I wrote my satire information on a sheet of paper for now, and I will continue to look for my booklet!
~Leanna :-) |

I totally agree with you, Mati and Lauren!! Like Mati said, I think everyone has been in a conflict before. Unfortunatey, in the world today, it seems like nobody agrees with anything. Sammy, that is a really good point! I never thought about wars that way! It is really cool how everyone thinks about things in different perspectives! Until now, I never realized how much satire is happening all around us(especially in politics)! There are so many people that use it and sarcasam all the time... like Jacob. I like how The Pushcart War is written in a very unique way, that makes it really different to read!

Acceptance! important word. Thanks for bringing it to our attention Kaylee. What do the rest of you think about the role of acceptance? Can cultural differences really cause war? i'm wondering if there is a cultural difference involved in Puchcart War. |
Mrs. Van D 05/09/2012 7:54 PM |
Katie, What did you get as the message from "One Tin Soldier"? What was the irony? Has anyone else listened? What were the authors wanting to bring to the attention of thier audience? |
Katie A 05/09/2012 7:32 PM |
oh yeah, one tin soldier had a great message! |
Katie A 05/09/2012 7:31 PM |
I thought that we had to get satire from the book, and i was bored, so i read a lot, and i still couldn't find any. now i will just use google |
Kelsi 05/09/2012 6:56 PM |
I think war is started when 2 countries or even the same country have endless conflict. Soon, the conflict turns to war. Even after the war the conflict is normally still there. |
Kaylee S. 05/09/2012 6:17 PM |
War is started because people can't accept other people for their differences and culture. If people were able to accept one another, we wouldn't have any wars. Also, people need to understand that everyone is equal. |
Isabelle W. 05/09/2012 4:59 PM |
I think that wars begin by a conflict happening between two groups of people. One group would do something that the other group doesn't like. For example a group could either want there to be slaves, or want to break away from a country and form their own, or try to take control of a country. |
Lauren M. 05/09/2012 3:52 PM |
Thanks. I like satire. It is fun to have a teacher who promotes using a form of sarcasm. But technically it is suposed to be constructive to someone. It's almost as fun. |
Mrs. Van D 05/08/2012 9:33 PM |
Awareness! That's what this study is all about. Thanks for mentioning it. In your booklet, I would like you to define satire as you develop your understanding of it and provide examples from your reading, viewing and experiences. Be sure to save room for an example from Pushcart War. These definitions and examples will be developed over the next couple of weeks. If your definitions changes over time, that's good. Write both what you are thinking now and what you think later.
HMS students. Your teachers will have your assignment for Wdnesday. I'll meet with you on Thursday. GMS, i will see you at 1:35 Wednesday. |
Lauren:D 05/08/2012 8:53 PM |
Thanks! I had a couple similar definetions that I found, and I didn't get too many examples. I did catch some satires from listening to my sister and even texting! It's funny how I never realized this until now, when I was listening for them! |
Isabella 05/08/2012 8:03 PM |
Lauren, I think we can just write down a definition and/or a few examples that we found when we googled the word satire. Hope this helps! |
Lauren:D 05/08/2012 7:15 PM |
Just a question: do we have to write down our examples of satire in our booklet or our post-it note? Is it okay if we just remember the examples we found and share them? |
Katie A 05/08/2012 6:26 PM |
i think that as long as we are the way we are, with no major change, there will always be conflict of some sort. Here are different dictionaries' opinions of the word satire:
merriam--webster
: a literary work holding up human vices and follies to ridicule or scorn
2
: trenchant wit, irony, or sarcasm used to expose and discredit vice or folly
oxford: the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues. |

War,war never changes- Morgan Freeman
I think that wars are just a waste of time, money and lives. There are around 100,000 US soldiers in the Middle East and people are killed every day.
and just think how many have been killed just in this war over the last 10 years alone.Just think about how many people have been killed or wounded in wars since the first Neanderthal threw a rock at another Neanderthal and hit him in the face.I really dont know what else to say..../\(o_o)/\

Austin Huggins 05/08/2012 6:15 PM |
I haven't really considered how wars begin. It's obviously a conflict between one or more people, but how does that conflict arise? Two people dealing something out, making somehting right, or just yelling at each other could be considered fighting or even a full fledge war? The conflict to start a war (big or small) has to be pretty severe. |
Eric Y. 05/08/2012 5:52 PM |
War, just war. That is what you think when you hear about all the guns and fighting over seas. But is a fight with your friend a war? Answer that. I think that a fight with your friend isn't a war, but an over seas fight over freedom is a war. fighting for freedom is ok, but a fight with your friend over a toy, now thats not reasonable. War and fighting breaks us apart. |
Mrs. Van D 05/07/2012 9:42 PM |
Thanks to all of you for sharing your ideas. I agree that our discussion needs a definition of terms. Anyone want to propose one? |
Sammy;D 05/07/2012 8:37 PM |
One thing to add to our little conversation: We are all human. We don't all agree on one thing and, it's a matter of fact that we NEVER will. Like Lauren said, arguements are all around us. But the question is are they wars? We are talking about wars not disagreements between friends. So, in my "unique" point of view, everyone is at peace with war. It reallly doesn't seem like anyone is trying to stop wars from happening because we all like to get our own way so the instinct is to fight for it. And no one is trying to change that. So in a weird sort of way, we all are okay with war- even if we think we aren't.
We are all human and we will all agree and disagree, we will all start arguements, and we will win and lose sometimes. We are all human.
WOW. That was deep. Haha :) |
Emmie 05/07/2012 8:30 PM |
Ive never really thought of how wars start, but I guess it's usually because of an argument or because 2 people want 2 different things and they fight for it. But there are totally different kinds of wars. There's the stereotypical war with guns and fighting, and you could have a war with something like words, where you're basically talking at each other to get your point across. You could also have a mini-war, like where you're ignoring someone because they were mean to you or something like that. All of these are wars, and they all start for different reasons. |
Emmie 05/07/2012 8:25 PM |
The world seems like it'll never be at peace because nobody can all agree on one thing. Everyone believes in something different and that's never going to chance. World peace will probably never happen because not everyone wants it. Some people hold grudges and still haven't forgiven others for something they did ages ago, and if there is any hate or even small fighting in the world, we are not at peace. I wish wars or even tiny little disagreements wouldn't happen, but because everyone wants something different, they do. |
Lauren:D 05/07/2012 8:01 PM |
I think that, as bad as it sounds, the world will never be completely peaceful. Even if it's something as minor as a small fight at school, that counts as something not peaceful in the world. I think that some people enjoy arguments because they think that arguments are entertaining. I think arguments just make everyone uncomfortable. I've read a lot of books that take place in the past, like The Hunger Games, and the world always seems to get worse! I'm not saying that that's how the world is probably going to end up: I'm not that much of a pessimest! I just think that even if we try really hard to have peace, the unpeaceful things will always be there. I think that the important thing is trying to avoid those unpeaceful things! |
Mati 05/07/2012 7:33 PM |
I don't think there has ever been a time in the world with no conflict. Wars can start over the stupidest of things and everyone here can probably say they've been in at least one conflict/fight. |
Jen 05/07/2012 6:39 PM |
I think there is always something going on in the world, and no, I don't mean just in our country, but of course all over the world!! I mean, sure there are probably a few, very rare, times when the world is all in one piece, but I am pretty sure that most of the time, our world always has SOMETHING going on! |
Mrs. Van D 05/07/2012 5:08 PM |
Disputes over land have absolutely been cause for conflict and war. Sometimes one group needs resources another has, Other times individuals want power. One of the best known cases of a conflict over land my be over the control of Jerusalem.Do you think there has ever been a time when there was no conflict in the world? |
Samantha Partika 05/07/2012 4:58 PM |
Ive been in a conflict before but most of them didn't last too long. Some have been a week but it only usually happens once in awhile. I've never really thought about how wars got started until today when we started the new book. Now I really actually wonder how they start. I agree with Lauren about how they usually start with a argument about something. I always thought that usually people started the war because the people wanted land in the past. Is that true? |
Lauren:D 05/07/2012 4:45 PM |
Hi! I have been in conflicts before, but none of them were major conflicts that started anything that didn't last for longer than a few days. I have thought that people were planning something against me before, but really, I've never really done much to upset people. I never really thought about how wars started, just how stupid it was that so many people risked their lives over something that wasn't their fault. I also thought that there are better ways to settle conflict besides war. Before now I never thought of a war as something other than a big war like WW11 or the Civil War. Now I realized that wars don't have to be ten years long and across countries. A war usually starts with an argument, but not always. |
Mrs. Van D 05/06/2012 10:16 PM |
Have you ever been in a conflict? Have you ever considered how wars begin? Have you ever wondered if someone was conspiring against you? Please share your thoughts related to one or more of these questions.
