Below are listed the Learning Targets for the Memoir Unit:
Reading Learning Targets:
- I can define the characteristics of a memoir and identify and support these characteristics with textual evidence in the memoir I am reading.
- I can construct a summary that is concise and reflects the important ideas and information in the text.
- I can provide textual evidence to support how I personally connect to a memoir.
- I can infer the writer's larger message (theme).
To accomplish these learning targets, the student will read many short memoirs and personal essays. In addition, students will choose a memoir of greater length to read in a small group for book club.
Writing Learning Targets:
- I can select and pre-write about one person, place, moment, or thing that is significant in my life.
- I can reveal the significance of my memoir topic and its impact on me through explicit and/or implicit details.
- I can gather relevant information from multiple sources in order to gain a greater understanding of a memoir topic.
- I can write a variety of simple and compound sentences.
To accomplish these learning targets, the student will pre-write and write about many topics that lend themselves to memoirs or personal narratives. The writing process will be used to complete some pieces in their entirety. Other pieces will be used for focused lessons.
