Looking back....
World Language is required in HASD from 2nd grade until 7th grade. By 6th grade, students who have been in the district for elementary school have quite a bit of exposure to the language they're studying.
Looking forward....
After 7th grade, study of a World Language is optional, and is more academic in comparison to what students do in their elementary school FLES program.
As such, 6th and 7th grade Spanish serve as a transition between World Language in elementary school and World Language in high school -- so these courses are a bit more challenging than previous years. Students should expect to put forth time and effort both in and out of class to succeed in 6th grade Spanish.
6th grade Spanish classes meet every other day for a semester. Our curricular topics include: conversational questions and answers, basic cultural information about the Panama Canal, and parts of the body. 6th grade Spanish units review and expand upon content learned in elementary school, formally introduce students to the foundational concepts of formal/informal address, gender & number of nouns, and touch upon the basics of adjective agreement and verb conjugation.
