Tips for Supporting Communication at Home
|
Sequencing/Retelling:
-
Have your child retell events from a favorite story/movie/tv show
-
After storybook reading, have your child tell the story in his/her own words while using the pictures as cues
-
Draw pictures with your child that illustrate steps in a familiar sequence
-
Make schedules with picture supports to guide your child's routines
Following Directions
Describing
-
Play "I Spy" (ex. "I spy with my little eye something soft and blue"), give more descriptors as needed
-
Play "I'm thinking of" (ex. "I'm thinking of something that is round, bounces, and can be used to play catch.")
Articulation
-
Make a collage with your child's sound by cutting out and pasting pictures from magazines
-
Draw attention to objects in the environment with your child's target sound
-
Play a board game with your child and take turns using words/sentences using the target sound before each player's turn
Categorizing
-
Sort foods at the grocery store with like attributes (ex. foods that are salty, sweet, healthy, unhealthy)
-
Sort laundry into similar groups and describe how the groups are the same/not the same
Literacy
-
Read books together with your child
-
Identify rhyming words and initial/final sounds
-
Segment (break apart) and blend (put back together) words (i.e. "s-u-n, sun")
