About 8th Grade German
The 8th grade German course at HMS/FWA is a high school level, academic overload course that meets every day, all year long. This course is not required and is taken in lieu of a study hall. As this class is a continuation of 7th grade German, students wishing to enroll in 8th grade German must demonstrate a high level of proficiency in 7th grade German concepts. This class requires a high level of motivation, good time-management skills, and a serious academic focus.
While 8th grade German is more rigorous than what students have experienced before, there are many benefits to continuing the study of German in 8th grade.
- Studying a World Language in 8th grade allows students to continue developing their ability to communicate in another language without interruption.
- Students who successfully complete 8th grade German have the opportunity to earn one high-school fine arts credit. There is no World Language requirement to graduate from HHS, but many colleges and universities include the study of a World Language as part of their entrance/acceptance criteria.
- Studying a language in 8th grade provides students to opportunity to complete six levels of German by the time they graduate from high school. High school students in Levels 5 and 6 earn college credit while still at HHS.
- Upon successful completion of 8th grade German, 9th grade students are placed into Novice 2 (Level 2) or Intermediate 1 (Level 3) in high school. The HASD World Language department has developed a proficiency assessment, given in January, to place students into the appropriate course in 9th grade.
Students who elect NOT to take German in 8th grade will have the opportunity to studt a language at the high school. In this case, students enroll in Novice 1 (Level 1) where they review and build upon middle school World Language content.
