Art projects are developed in accordance with the Wisconsin Academic Standards for Art and Design Education, as well as the Art Curriculum of the Hortonville Area School District. Academic standards specify age-appropriate knowledge and abilities, and specify content, performance, and proficiency standards. This basically guides us in what students should know and be able to do, how they will show this knowledge, and how well they will perform. In Art Class, we build upon previously-learned knowledge every year; projects become more complicated, fine motor skills improve with age, and students gain a more in-depth knowledge of personal and cultural expressions of creativity.
Students are graded according to the following scale. With the new report cards, 'mastery' includes both proficient and advanced. 'Near mastery' would encompass the 'basic' category, and 'not yet' would include students who may need a little more time or assistance to meet curriculum goals. As much of art includes fine motor skills that are still developing, a little time and practice goes a long ways towards helping children improve.
