Third Grade Curriculum Information
Our mission is for every student to learn at the highest level. We use a variety of methods to do this, and we align our curriculum with the Common Core State Standards which were adopted by the state of Wisconsin. Below is a little more information by subject.
Language Word Study
Each week we study spelling words. Some of the words are from a word study principal that focuses on a component of word patterns. The others comes from errors in high frequency word testing. We also listen to vocabulary rich read alouds, study current events, read lots of poetry, and learn about various components of language.
Readers Workshop
Readers Workshop includes a book talk from our classroom library, a short directed mini lesson that students need to apply to their own reading, independent reading and guided reading. There is share time built into the end of the workshop to promote authentic conversations about books.
Writers Workshop
Writers Workshop consists of a writers talk, mini lesson for the day, independent writing and share time built in at the end. Skill work is included in between writing projects. We try out many different writing techniques with different writing projects.
Math
Math has many components that we weave together: A review activity, problem solving, concept lesson-(a specific concept and/or process is taught), assignment and/or extension, and math facts. Math is a busy time with lots of learning!
Science
We study Life, Earth and Physical Science in Grade 3. Our district uses Foss Science, which is a hands on learning way of investigating important science concepts.
Social Studies
In Social Studies we study Economics, Communities (local and global), Government (local and national), inventors and inventions and map skills.
