Built in 1999, Hortonville Elementary School is a 4-year-old Kindergarten through Grade 4 building with a current enrollment of 540 students. With 4 classrooms per grade level, class sizes typically range from 20 to 24 students. The academic course of study for Hortonville Elementary students consists of reading, writing, math, language, science, and social studies. In addition, students receive regular instruction in art, music, physical education, German, developmental guidance, computer, and library. Support services are available for students in the areas of supplemental reading and math, reading recovery, English Language Learning, and a variety of special education programs. A district Gifted and Talented Coordinator also works with our classroom teachers to ensure that the needs of all students are being met.
Hortonville Elementary participates in the Literacy Collaborative professional development framework. The components of this framework are designed to provide a comprehensive, school-wide approach to literacy instruction throughout all elementary classrooms. The goals are to improve the reading, writing, and language skills of elementary age children. Phonics is a strong component of this literacy framework.
Members of the HES staff have worked hard over the last several years to implement a program called Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (P.B.I.S). P.B.I.S. is a research and evidence-based framework that has been implemented in other schools throughout the state, nation, and within all Hortonville Area School District schools. The premise of P.B.I.S. is that a positive school environment for students and staff is enhanced through establishing clear expectations and taking active steps in teaching, modeling, and reinforcing appropriate behaviors school-wide. Our P.B.I.S. program, which we publicize as The Polar Bear Way, focuses on the character traits of Respect, Responsibility, Caring, and Honesty.
Providing services to the students of Hortonville Elementary School is a highly qualified staff.
