The Hortonville Area School District uses the following guidelines for returning to school after an illness.
- If your child has a fever of 100.0 F or more, they may return to school after being fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications like Tylenol
- If your child was vomiting, they may return to school after they have gone 24 hours without vomiting
- If your child was experiencing diarrhea, they may return to school after having gone 24 hours without any episodes of diarrhea
- Rashes or patches of broken, itchy skin need to be examined by a healthcare provider if they appear to be spreading or not improving
- For COVID-like symptoms, Influenza symptoms, or generally not feeling well:
- Stay home
- Return to school after 24 hours fever-free without fever reducing medications
- Return to school after 24 hours without vomiting or diarrhea
- If your child tested positive for COVID-19:
- Return to school when symptoms are mild AND 24 hours fever free without fever reducing medications.
- If your child has been diagnosed with a communicable disease as defined Wisconsin Department of Health, please contact the school nurse to discuss when the child should return to school.
Please note that for an absence to be exempt from attendance, we need to have a note from a provider stating they cannot be at school and/or were seen in the clinic.

All schools within the Hortonville Area School District are serviced by a school nurse, along with a health aide in order to ensure all students receive the care and support they need during the school day. Some of the many responsibilities of our school nursing staff include:
- Caring for sick or injured students
- Caring for students requiring specialized medical care
- Handling emergency situations
- Serving as a resource for students, staff and families
- Implementing procedures for the prevention and control of communicable diseases
- Promoting health and wellness of all students in the Hortonville Area School District
