Math is not simply a subject in school isolated from the real world; math is an essential component we all need to contribute to society. I encourage students to recognize that we use math on a daily (if not hourly) basis. Mentally, we calculate time, we estimate distance, we guage whether or not we'll be able to finish a book by the end of the day. Make sure to share with your student how valuable math skills are - not for school or for some distant future career - but every day in so many ways. Encourage your student to help measure for your next home project, or decipher how much material you might neet for a sewing project; have your student estimate how much that new carpeting might cost to install in the living room. You might be surprised and delighted at the ways your student can use "Math in the Real World."
