Informational Unit: Learning Targets
Writing informational text calls for students to examine and convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately. Multiple text sources wil be gathered, analyzed, and synthesized in order to shed new light on a concept of their choice. Students will work towards selecting and incorporating relevant examples, facts, and details into their writing combined with background knowledge and experience. At the same time, students will work on developing their writing craft, becoming skilled in techniques for connecting ideas, using domain specific vocabulary, transitioning, and using text features to aid comprehension of the selected topic.
Finding Resources
When searching for credible sources on the World Wide Web, it is important to evaluate each source found. You want to know that the source is credible (trustworthy), reliable (reputation for providing accurate information), and does not contain bias (opinion for or against the topic).
When search on the web, you select sites that give you are URL (Uniform Resource Locator) which provides an internet address for each site. URL’s have domain specific suffixes such as the ones below (reference handout too).
Evaluate the following:
- Spacesuits_R_Us: spacesuitsrus.com
- NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration: nasa.gov
- Next Stop: Mars: nextstopmars.org
Task: Rank these three resources in terms of how valuable and reliable they might be for research in the early days of the US Space Program. Explain your rankings.
