During our study of Pushcart War by Jean Merril we will look at the satire and irony that makes this novel humorus with a purpose. Satire is use by authors to point out folly or injustice. According to dictionary.com satire is "the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice , folly, etc." Irony is the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its litteral meaning: the ironey of her relpy "How nice!" when I said I had to work all weekend.
During this study you will look for examples of both of these literary techniques in movies, TV shows, and literature. Start by googling "satire." Share some of what you find about the meaning of satire and examples that are school appropriate.
