Students from Hortonville Middle School (HMS), Fox West Academy (FWA), Greenville Middle School (GMS), and Hortonville High School (HHS) demonstrated outstanding musical talent at the District Solo & Ensemble Festivals held last weekend. Many musicians earned top ratings, with several qualifying for the state competition at the end of April.
At HMS and FWA, students in grades 5 through 8 participated in 42 events, earning an impressive 36 gold medals and six silver medals. This year, HMS and GMS Swing Choirs joined forces for the first time to compete as a large group, featuring students in grades 6-8. After months of dedicated Saturday rehearsals and twice-weekly before-school practices, the group performed two vocal jazz pieces, earning a silver medal for their performance. Shoutout to Karma CoenenSchroeder, an 8th-grade student at Fox West Academy, who received a 1* rating for her vocal solo, securing a place at the state competition.
At GMS, 67 band students participated in 52 events, with two 7th-grade musicians, Jenna Sargent and Tenley DeBrock, earning state competition qualifications for their solo performances. In choir, 19 students competed in 14 events, with 11 earning a gold rating and three receiving silver ratings.
At HHS, students continued the District’s tradition of musical excellence. The choir participated in 26 events, with 14 qualifying for the state competition. The HHS band showcased its talent in 44 events, with 21 advancing to state.
Students put in countless hours of practice before and after school, as well as on weekends, to prepare for these events. It takes tremendous dedication and courage to perform in front of an audience and a judge, and we are incredibly proud of their accomplishments! The hard work and commitment our students display year after year at Solo & Ensemble is inspiring, and these results are a testament to their dedication and passion for music.
We would like to extend our congratulations to all participating students on their performances and their achievements, and wish those advancing to the state competition in April the best of luck! #RollBears
