Students begin to learn to keyboard in their fifth grade and sixth grade digital literacy classes and are expected to complete keyboarding assignments both during and outside class times. Seventh and eighth grade students are encouraged to practice their keyboarding skills independently at school and at home using a variety of online typing software and digital keyboarding learning games.
All students in fifth through eighth grades should set personal keyboarding goals and complete periodic assessments in Typing Pal to assess their keyboarding progress. ♦ALL GMS students should now use Typing Pal to practice their keyboarding at home or anywhere with a computer and Internet connection.
Eighth grade students take the 8th grade keyboarding assessment each year in January (right after break). In order to place out of the ninth grade HHS basic keyboarding course, eighth grade students need to type 35 words a minute or faster with an accuracy of 90% or higher using a one minute Typing Pal timing and keyboard cover.
Students who do not successfully complete the Eighth Grade Keyboarding Assessment with the required score of at least 35 words a minute with an accuracy of 90% will be required to take the HHS semester-long ninth grade Keyboarding course.
