Online Learning at HASD
As a result of strategic planning, HASD is personalizing student learning by offering more blended education opportunities throughout the district. In an innovated blended learning classroom, students use technology independently or in groups and still experience face-to-face instruction delivery by the teacher. Using software to enhance children’s mastery of concepts creates a flexible learning environment. The online portion of the curriculum allows students to retain information at an individualized pace, and the teacher monitors student performance and addresses identified needs.
Students in the blended learning classrooms range from kindergarten through 12th grade. When students use the online content and curriculum, teachers are able to provide one-on-one instruction to students in need. “With more time for one-on-one, small group teacher time, peer group work, and individualized digital learning, our students develop strong desires to be independent learners and take much pride in their learning, which motivates them to exceed their learning expectations,” explained Peg Mischler, second grade teacher at Greenville Elementary School.
Students utilizing the online learning systems have consistently scored higher on tests when compared to traditionalized learning environments, and are, as a whole, practicing advanced skills for their age level. Subjects like math and reading become games that children can enjoy and will also challenge them. High school students, in addition to blended learning, work on integrated projects that combine different subjects, enabling them to understand topics in new and unique ways.
Instructors are planning on implementing a digital library system for students to work on their assignments from home or at school. This online library will have videos and resources for students and parents to go for extra support when needed.
