Students interested in auditioning will play a selection with a recording. The first time through the selection, they will play the head (main melody section) as written. The second time through, they will improvise using the chord changes of the selection in a similar style.
Drum set audition will include playing in several styles including but not limited to Swing(various tempos), Shuffle, Classic Rock, Bossa Nova, Reggae, Polka, and proper use of brushes.
Blind Auditions— Students audition by signing their name to a sheet on their way into the room. When we hear the door close behind the curtain, we wait a moment and then start the recording. The student should not identify themselves to the director. The audition is scored using a performance rubric based on tone, style, tempo, articulation, and improvisation. After the auditions are complete, the scores are sorted in the spreadsheet, the names are added to the scores based on their performance order, and the students are assigned parts.
