About 6th Grade German
The 6th grade German course at HMS/FWA is an exploratory World Language course that meets every other day for one semester. As the 6th grade course is no longer FLES (Foreign Language in the Elementary School), students will continue exploring German at a deeper level, as well as begin studying Spanish!! At the end of the semester, students will select which language they would like to study in 7th grade (Spanish or German). Our district offers our 6th graders instruction in both German and Spanish so that students can make an educated decision as to which language they would like to study in 7th and 8th grade.
7th grade is the last year that students at required to take a World Language. However, many students choose to continue studying in 8th grade and beyond.
- The 2nd through 6th grade Spanish and German curriculums are by design very similar with regard to the language concepts students learn. There are many skills and understandings that will transfer if a student chooses to switch from German to Spanish, or from Spanish to German. While there will be new sounds and vocabulary to learn, it won’t be like starting a brand new language with no prior knowledge.
- Looking ahead, the 7th grade World Language curriculum (in both Spanish and German) introduces students to concepts very similar to a Novice 1 (first year) class in a traditional high school progression. While the course content and pace are adapted for a middle school learner, 7th grade World Language classes are less exploratory (and more challenging) than elementary school World Language classes. Whichever language they choose for 7th grade, students will need to put forth effort both in and out of class in order to be successful.
- Looking even further ahead…..8th grade World Language classes in HASD are a continuation of 7th grade World Language. Therefore, the language your child chooses for 7th grade will be their language in 8th grade as well, if they continue studying a language. (8th grade world language is optional, and students must demonstrate proficiency with 7th grade concepts in order to enroll.
