Overview
Hortonville Elementary School is a community school committed to providing a warm, friendly environment for all of our children and their families. We share the Kids at Hope belief that “All children are capable of success – no exceptions.” Our mission statement reads Through combined efforts of staff, parents, and community, our school is committed to developing a foundation of skills and values in an exciting, challenging environment to ignite the flame for a lifetime of learning.

Built in 1999, Hortonville Elementary School is a K – 4 building with a current enrollment which is approaching 450 students. With 4 classrooms per grade level, class sizes typically range from 20 to 24 students. The academic course of study for Hortonville Elementary students consists of reading, writing, math, language, science, and social studies. In addition, students receive regular instruction in art, music, physical education, Spanish, developmental guidance, computer, and library. Support services are available for students in the areas of supplemental reading and math, extended-day kindergarten, reading recovery, English Language Learning, and a variety of special education programs. A district Gifted and Talented Coordinator also works with our classroom teachers to ensure that the needs of all students are being met.

School Goals
School goals at Hortonville Elementary are established through a site planning process. Our plan was updated in January of 2006 when a team of staff, parents, and community members met to establish building targets for the next five year period. The plan incorporates the following objectives:

Objective #1: Students will demonstrate annual growth in meeting or exceeding district and state-established standards at each grade level in reading, language, writing and math by 2011.

Objective #2: All students will be positive, self-directed citizens applying the characteristics of respect, caring, honesty and responsibility in the school and community.

Objective #3: All students will demonstrate an understanding of personal health, nutrition and physical fitness.

Progress in accomplishing these goals is updated yearly and is included in the district’s Annual Report.

Literacy Collaborative
Hortonville Elementary School is a Literacy Collaborative School. On a yearly basis, several questions typically surface as to the term Literacy Collaborative. As a point of clarification, Literacy Collaborative is not our reading program. Instead, the phrase Literacy Collaborative refers to the professional development model that we utilize to provide literacy training to our staff at Hortonville Elementary School. Although it is not a “reading program” the model does assist staff in teaching from a framework that is based upon research and documented “best practice” in the teaching of literacy. Today, the majority of our staff, whether teaching in a regular education classroom or in a supplemental/resource support role, is involved in on-going Literacy Collaborative training.

The main goal of Literacy Collaborative is to raise the achievement levels for all students. Six years ago (2001-2002), 81% of our fourth grade students scored at the proficient or advanced level on the reading portion of the state required WKCE (Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examination). This was the first year that our literacy coordinator began to provide training for the Hortonville Elementary School staff. Last year (2006-2007), 90% of our fourth grade students scored at the proficient or advanced level on the reading portion of the WKCE.

The state began reporting student scores on the fourth grade WKCE in the 1997-98 school year. Our students average 80% proficient or advanced on the reading portion of this exam over the five year period which included the year that our first teachers were trained under the Literacy Collaborative model. Over the next five year period following the initial training year, our students have averaged 90% proficient or advanced in reading on this assessment. Literacy Collaborative has had a definite impact on improving students’ achievement not only in the area of reading. Similar results are also evident in the areas of language, science, and social studies – other academic areas where the application of skills in reading and writing are critical.

The ten-year comparison of the achievement levels of our fourth grade students in reading and reading related standardized tests is striking. The Literacy Collaborative staff development model is truly an initiative which has made a difference in our school. More information about Literacy Collaborative can be found on pages 2 and 3 of the Hortonville Elementary School Parent & Student Handbook.
