Welcome to the Independent Learning Center or I.L.C. known by many as the "Bus Garage". Why the name "Bus Garage"? In 1992, the alternative education program was housed in the actual bus garage. It has come to be a sense of identity for our students.
The Hortonville High School Alternative Education Department provides credit recovery through independent paper-based and computer based curriculum. We also provide classroom remediation as well as supporting students in campus classes, through grade checks and help on assignments.
Additionally, we offer a variety of program options for student's whose life circumstances make it difficult to succeed in a traditional educational setting. Naturally, the resasons for this are as unique as each student. Staff, students, and parents create a plan that will guide each student through their education based on their unique needs.
Alternative Ed. is not a placement program. Students voluntary accept enrollment.
The enrollment process:
- Referral: Students can be referred by a guidance counselor, administrator, teacher, parent or other school staff who may feel a student would benefit from our services. Additionally, students can "self refer" by contacting any of the above.
- Review: An Alternative Ed teacher evaluates the student's transcript, the referrals and collects other information to provide the most complete profile as possible. We also like to have a conversation with the student to gather information about their education.
- Recommendation: A small team of counselors and alt. ed. staff will review the above information and make a recommendation on how to best serve a student, if appropriate.
- Admission: Once this recommendation is made, students and parents are contacted to schedule an admissions meeting to discuss the details of the most appropriate service a student would be served. During this meeting students will fill out agreements of expectations, both academic and behavioral. Again, receiving our services is voluntary.
To best serve all of our students, there are limited space for our independent study periods. Due to the limited space and the voluntary accpetance of our services, Alt. Ed. staff consitently reviews the appropriateness of each student's services. Depending on the circumstances, parents will be notified if a student requires program changes.
