How to identify the if your chemical contains an alcohol group.
Test 1: Chromic Acid Test
Chromic Acid test: Dissolve one drop of the unknown alcohol in 1ml acetone. Add one small drop of the chromic acid reagent (Jones reagent) Note any color change within 2 seconds.
Pos. Test: 1° and 2° alcohols will cause the orange solution to change to opaque suspension with green to blue color. No color change for 3° alcohols (within the first couple of minutes).
Note: Phenols give a dark colored solution which is not blue-green like a positive test. Aldehydes give positive result as well.
