Preliminary information
We are going to be investigating the falling rate of a coffee filter. You will need a meter stick and a timer. You can use a timer provided or you can use your phone.
On a separate sheet of paper answer the following questions.
1. Sketch out a short procedure to answer the following questions and create a data table to hold the data for your experiment.
2. What is the terminal velocity of the coffee filter?
3. What is the force of gravity on the coffee filter.
4. What is the force of drag on the coffee filter when at max velocity?
5. What is the area of the coffee filter?
6. What is the coefficient of drag of the coffee filter?
Exploration question:
7. Multiply your number of coffee filters (stack 5 or 10) of them. Answer the following questions?
a. Will the terminal velocity increase or decrease? justify.
b. Calculate new terminal velocity with your Cd from above.
c. Physically calculate. Justify any difference?
Answer the questions and turn in before the end of the period.
